Innocence

I see it in the child’s eye,
and in every heart Truth adorns.
It is a pearl beyond price; why?

Its possessor is like a lily among thorns,
As sin makes men think they must sink in its own mire.
For to be pure is something that the world scorns.

Can words describe a virtue more radiant than sapphire,
More brilliant than any gold or diamond, without compare!
This wonder is not of ourselves, but of One higher.

Those who have been soiled need not despair,
for there is Penance’s flame, with fasting and prayer.
Those who have it still, preserve this garment without wear!
